child & teen therapy in asheville, nc
support for anxiety, school avoidance, family conflict, growing up & more
I provide therapy for children and teens in Asheville, NC, with an approach that considers development, family, school, relationships, and environment. I’ve spent nearly a decade working in therapeutic settings with young people and their families, and I balance evidence-based interventions with building a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship.
My goal is to help young people better understand their emotions and behavior, tolerate distress, communicate effectively, navigate relationships, and make thoughtful decisions.
I also work with parents to better understand what their child is experiencing, what is developmentally appropriate, and how to respond without unintentionally reinforcing patterns they’re trying to change.
my approach to child & teen therapy
Kids and teenagers don't always communicate distress by telling an adult exactly what is wrong.
Anxiety may look like irritability, reassurance seeking, perfectionism, physical complaints, or refusing to go to school. Depression may show up as withdrawal, changes in motivation, anger, or spending significantly more time alone. ADHD and executive functioning difficulties can contribute to academic problems, conflict at home, shame, and feeling chronically overwhelmed. Family stress may emerge through arguing, shutting down, avoidance, or behavioral changes.
Rather than looking exclusively at the behavior itself, I want to understand what may be maintaining it and what the young person is communicating through it.
Assessment is an ongoing part of my work. I consider developmental stage, symptoms, family dynamics, environmental stressors, relationships, patterns of avoidance or reinforcement, strengths, and the young person's own understanding of what they're experiencing. Treatment is then individualized around what is actually happening rather than applying the same set of skills to every child.

Sometimes there isn't a clear diagnosis or single presenting problem. A parent may simply notice that their child seems increasingly anxious, isolated, angry, avoidant, or unlike themselves. Therapy can help us better understand what is happening and determine what kind of support makes sense.
working with parents
Parent involvement is an important component of effective child and adolescent therapy.
How involved a parent is will depend on the child's age, developmental needs, presenting concerns, safety considerations, and treatment goals. This may include parent consultations, periodic check-ins, psychoeducation, family sessions, or helping parents change interaction patterns at home that may unintentionally reinforce anxiety, avoidance, or conflict.
At the same time, adolescents in particular need a meaningful degree of privacy to develop trust in therapy. At the beginning of treatment, I talk with families about confidentiality, its limits, how safety concerns will be handled, and how I communicate with parents while protecting the therapeutic relationship. I want parents to understand the treatment process without making their child feel as though everything discussed in therapy will immediately be reported back home.
evidence-based therapy for kids & teens
My approach is integrative, meaning I draw from different therapeutic approaches based on a young person’s age, developmental needs, symptoms, and goals. My work incorporates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), cognitive and behavioral interventions, Motivational Interviewing, attachment theory, family systems, psychodynamic therapy, and experiential approaches.
ACT & Cognitive Behavioral Approaches
I use ACT and cognitive behavioral strategies to help kids and teens understand the connections between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while building greater flexibility in how they respond to difficult experiences. Treatment may include coping and emotion regulation skills, cognitive reframing, behavioral activation, gradual exposure, and identifying patterns that reinforce anxiety or avoidance.
Family Systems & Attachment
Children and teens develop within families, schools, relationships, and larger systems. I consider attachment experiences, family dynamics, communication patterns, and environmental stressors as part of treatment. Rather than identifying one person as the problem, we look at patterns within relationships and where meaningful change can occur.
Developmentally Appropriate Therapy
Therapy with children often works best when it goes beyond talking. I incorporate games, creative activities, movement, and experiential exercises to build emotional awareness, frustration tolerance, communication, flexibility, and problem-solving skills.
With teens, therapy typically becomes more conversational and collaborative, with space to explore relationships, identity, anxiety, family dynamics, substance use, boundaries, independence, and the transition toward adulthood.
